Your sidekick is constantly interrupting gameplay to tell you what to do next, and when these prompts are optional they're still annoying and intrusive. You can only fast travel by diving into a specific point from the sky, which creates tedium if you're already on the surface. It's either a lengthy fetch quest, a stealth mission, an escort mission, or some combination of those. And every time the central objective in these zones isn't "find the dungeon" or whatever. On top of that, the game mostly revolves around you traveling back to the same three zones over and over again when the story dictates it. So the game feels like it's missing a core component. And there's no feeling of sailing uncharted waters, either. They've made good with this kind of world before in Wind Waker, but Skyward Sword doesn't even try to match the relaxing chill feel of sailing. And the sky barely even takes advantage of the fact that it's in the sky to do interesting verticality things, there's little incentive to explore outside of one very specific section midway through the game. Once you reach the surface, you're dealing mostly with compartmentalized areas designed around fetch quests. This game's "overworld" is a sky zone that's 95% literally empty space. The highlight of most Zelda games is exploring the overworld. Not a huge overhaul, but at least somewhat more. This one needed a) to keep the DOF effect for its artstyle to work, and b) retexture at least part of the game, and improve some geometry. And even that one is strugling to look good on the wii u at some times with mudd textures. It looks like the predecessor to BotWs artstyle.in every way. TP would have looked like ass without the retexturing. WW has the benefit of a generally flatter and more stylized artstyle. and now we see how bad some of the assets look. Now they removed the painterly optics with the DOF effect, and made everything crispy clear.

i said the artstyle was hampered by the wii, cause the try to have this painterly optics clashed with the already washed out image of the wii at that time. But instead of letting you explore it at least on your own pace like metroidvanias do it always interrupts the gameplay.Īnd the optics.yeah. Its the only 3D zelda that feels like the gb ones: more metroidvania with strict coridors and backtrackign then the feel i get from zeldas. Skyword Sword's whole structure and pacing felt off to me, it's one of the big letdowns I have experienced in gaming, along with Final Fantasy 13.Ĭlick to shrink.Your impression of the game: spot on. Oh but I have to agree with others, the whole game is easily the worst Zelda game I played, it often even didn't feel like a Zelda game, and even if it wasn't a Zelda game, it would still be a real bad action adventure game. The low quality asset artstyle is unpleasant to look at.

SKYWARD SWORD ROM SIZE SERIES

It's legitimately great we get to play a major Zelda game with the framerate this series deserves, but the rest of the game looks awful.

The only thing it has going for it is 60fps. I absolutely loved how the Twilight Princess remaster looked (outside of running at 30fps of course), and my initial impression of this new Skyword Sword release was, why the hell does it look way way worse than the previous Zelda remasters? 1 disappointment in gaming history.Īgreed. Then, by the time I realised that these linear corridor sections are actually the real world, the game was over. After all this padding it must be GREAT! This is Zelda after all! But I was let down to see that I have to deal with all these linear corridor sections first - they felt really tedious and stretched out, while I just couldn't wait to see the REAL WORLD this game has to offer.W hen I finally left the island and got down to the mainland, it felt like a really big deal, and man was I excited to see this lush, magical world everybody was talking about!.The starting island was really great with building up excitment to go out and explore the rest of world. My impressions of Skyword Sword as a longtime Zelda fan:
